Why we recommend it: The FUNNEST way to open a bottle of wine. And the easiest way to open a suspect cork without damaging it and leaving cork crumbs in the bottle.
Cork Pops Legacy Wine Bottle Opener: Cork Pops Legacy is designed to fit all traditional wine bottles as well as flanged lip bottles. The new rubberized black finish makes it the perfect addition to any style barware - easier to grasp and the new streamlined shape makes it more user friendly and ergonomic.
- It will work on most any cork - unless it's leaking. (If the cork is leaking you will want to have a Durand standing by. Please see our Connoisseur Collection. In the very least, you should have an Ah-So. Please see our Daily Drinker Collection.)
- Includes one cartridge which will open approximately 60 bottles. (Additional cartridges available at VinGrotto.com.)
- Built-in foil cutter.
Please note: In one of the reviews a person wrote that "...the cork is released with such force that some wine jumps out..." This occurs when you hold the button down too long which lets in too much of the gas. Experiment with less and less until you get a feel for it. Then amaze your friends!
This is an excellent accessory to add to your kitchen. So far, my corkpops has opened every wine bottle we've tried it on, but we've only tried regular sized wine bottles. The instructions actually advise against using the corkpops on irregularly shaped or larger bottles. We've had lots of fun using it, and it adds an extra bit of fun to drinking wine. I can foresee us drinking more wine just to use the corkpops. I have given the corkpops as a gift to three other people and they all love it. If you are or know someone who is a wine drinker, I highly recommend you give this thing a try!
Love it, love it, love it! Well designed and rugged. I have had one for years and use it frequently for opening wine bottles and bought this a gift. The opener has a clever device to cut off the cap foil, then stab the cork, hit the button and the cork pops right out. Also, it has an integrated device that when twisted, pulls the cork off the needle with ease. The CO2 cartridges lasts a long time and are inexpensive. I think I may change the cartridge once every couple of years. Plastic corks can give this opener trouble, but regular corks are no match! Highly reccommend this product!
I've used it with two older wines (a 1986 Bordeaux and a 1989 Port blend). The only criticism I can make is that the cork is released with such force that some wine jumps out of the bottle when the cork is released. I am experimenting with wrapping the device in a paper towel to catch the wine that shoots out. Even though it's a small amount, it will land on your shirt, especially if you're having guests and wearing a nice shirt. With the long Bordeaux cork, the needle extended a few millimeters into the open space and was long enough to do the job. I don't know if there are longer corks than that one, but I will update if necessary.
As for removing the cork, the device splits in half, one part turns and screws down, moving the cork along with it. The cork can then be removed very easily from the needle. Often, I don't read instructions, so this was probably mentioned and is no fault of the Cork Pops device. Update. After several more uses, with older Bordeaux wines, I can say there is no product that solves the problem of crumbling corks better than this one. Again, the trick is to be rather forceful. Once the needle is all the way in, depress the button, ride the device up with the pressure on the cork, and remove it in one motion. I now wrap the whole thing in a paper towel, which catches the little bit of wine that jumps out of the bottle during the process. Another benefit is that you can leave the bottle upright, keeping the sediment at the bottom where it belongs.
Works like a charm and much less costly than some other gas openers out there. I haven't been able to find any reports of negative effects on wine. The head space on a new bottle is so small anyway. Notes, This is not effective on half filled bottles. It's the small headspace of a new bottle that makes it effective. Also, it doesn't take much. Don't go pressing it down for 1-2 seconds. I give it little quick pulses and pull simultaneously, which results in no explosions of corks into your face and less gas used. To me this is the safest way to open a bottle of wine once you understand how to use it. I had a friend slice a tendon in his hand using a lever type that clamps around the bottle. Refills are economical too. I give it four stars because I've only had this particular brand for a short while.
